Montana Bans TikTok

Montana has passed An Act Banning TikTok and it has been signed by Montana’s Governor. The act becomes effective from January 1, 2024. This has been due to data concerns surrounding the app and the company.

From January 1, 2024 TikTok may not operate within Montana. If TikTok or any mobile app store allow the app to be used or downloaded within Montana face penalties of up to £10,000 for each discrete violation and an additional £10,000 for each following day the violation occurs. Penalties may not be applied if the entity could not have reasonably known that the violation occurred in Montana.

Penalties will only be for applicable entities; in this act this means TikTok and mobile application stores. Penalties will not apply to TikTok users. The Department of Justice will enforce this.
